Amazing Madelyn Grace: Moving forward.

Hello! I know it’s been a while, but I wanted to make a post and fill y’all in on Madelyn real quick! For now, this will be the final update post for Madelyn since she is healing and getting better every day, but I’ll be sure and post when there are big milestone moments that we want to share. For now, here’s how things are:

Madelyn has been going to the hospital a couple of times a week for her outpatient rehab and she’s been doing really well! She’s very close to being done with her physical therapy, they have started up her speech therapy and will continue her occupational therapy. Her burns are healing nicely and she got to pick out a couple of compression masks to help with the healing of her face grafts. Mad opted for a bright blue one, but mom also made her get a neutral colored one. The mask will be similar to the gloves she wears on her hands and is a way to help with scarring. But do not get too excited because she doesn’t have to wear the bright blue mask out and about, just when she’s at the house. You can probably pay a small fee to have her wear it in public though. Please reach out to her for inquiries.

Physically, things are looking up. Emotionally, it’s quite a roller coaster. I believe being back in Hickman County has helped everyone tremendously. We’ve enjoyed getting to know our new roommate, a cat named Tiger. He’s very shy but mom has made it a passion project to get him (or her? I’m really not sure) to love us.

Two days ago marked two months since the fire happened. It often feels like it happened yesterday but at the same time it feels like it was 40 years ago. I think back to where we were two months ago today and how devastated we were to be spending Christmas Eve the way we were, but we did it. I truly thank God each day that we no longer have to look at Madelyn through the glass walls of her hospital room and I am in awe of the progress she’s made in such a short amount of time.

The other day after her rehab, I got to meet her and dad for a nice lunch at J. Alexanders. The last time I had J. Alexanders was in our Hampton Inn hotel room on Christmas Eve. So many good things have happened since then but that was a moment of such uncertainty about a lot of things. Nevertheless, we look forward for more good things to rise from uncertainty we still face today.

As we close out a chapter of this Amazing Madelyn Grace blog, I just want to thank every single person for every kind word and every bit of love for this project. When I was asked to do it, I was so nervous to write about what was going on because I wanted to do it in the right way that honored Madelyn and the very vulnerable and terrifying situation she was in. I believe it benefited everyone in such a remarkable way that I never expected. Thank you for giving me a space to not only inform everyone who loves Madelyn about her recovery, but also for giving me a space to heal in my own way.

When all is said and done, Madelyn gets better every day and will continue to get better as the days go by. I pray for good physical and mental health for her and my parents who have shown their abundant love and resilience.

Thank you again to everyone for all of the things all of the time. You’ve been so good to us and I will never be able to say how blessed we are.

Grace has prevailed!
